Inspired by the many demonstrations of "humankindness" that supported their family through Mia's recovery, Brad began writing about the people who rescued his family from that dark time, often with the smallest of gestures. Amid the stress and despair of waiting for the treatment to work, Brad and Mia were met by an outpouring of kindness from friends, family, and even complete strangers. Well today’s post is about the Madame of Erotica herself Anaïs Nin and author many have recommended I try and not for the reasons you might be thinking you mucky minded lot! Though this review could end up not being for the faint hearted or easily offended, you might want to avert your eyes.Īs Anaïs Nin states herself in the preface of ‘Delta of Venus’ this collection was never really intended to be published, in fact when these tales were originally written they were simply created for someone she names only as ‘The Collector’ in order to bring in the money. Isn’t it interesting the power of the words… porn and erotica. Then again some people will possibly have closed there browsers before they get further than that first line and some people will have found this blog for the first time because of it. I personally think there is a huge divide between pornography and erotica. Her interest in non-Western philosophies was reflected in works such as "Solitude" and The Telling but even more interesting are her imagined societies, often mixing traits extracted from her profound knowledge of anthropology acquired from growing up with her father, the famous anthropologist, Alfred Kroeber. She was known for her treatment of gender ( The Left Hand of Darkness, The Matter of Seggri), political systems ( The Telling, The Dispossessed) and difference/otherness in any other form. Her recent publications include the novel Lavinia, an essay collection, Cheek by Jowl, and The Wild Girls. Le Guin published twenty-two novels, eleven volumes of short stories, four collections of essays, twelve books for children, six volumes of poetry and four of translation, and has received many awards: Hugo, Nebula, National Book Award, PEN-Malamud, etc. For now, after all, the night is still young. Lillian figures she might as well take her time. On a walk that takes her over 10 miles around the city, she meets bartenders, bodega clerks, security guards, criminals, children, parents, and parents-to-be, while reviewing a life of excitement and adversity, passion and heartbreak, illuminating all the ways New York has changed - and has not. It’s chilly enough out for her mink coat and Manhattan is grittier now - her son keeps warning her about a subway vigilante on the prowl - but the quick-tongued poetess has never been one to scare easily. Now it’s the last night of 1984 and Lillian, 85 years old but just as sharp and savvy as ever, is on her way to a party. It was a job that, she says, “in some ways saved my life, and in other ways ruined it.” Macy’s to become the highest paid advertising woman in the country. She took 1930s New York by storm, working her way up writing copy for R.H. In my reckless and undiscouraged youth, Lillian Boxfish writes, “I worked in a walnut-paneled office thirteen floors above West Thirty-Fifth Street.” A love letter to city life in all its guts and grandeur, Lillian Boxfish Takes a Walk by Kathleen Rooney paints a portrait of a remarkable woman across the canvas of a changing America: from the Jazz Age to the onset of the AIDS epidemic the Great Depression to the birth of hip-hop. But the real test lies ahead: eliminating a hidden enemy, so that he and Dwyn can seal their Highland passion with a vow. Her lush figure and eager kisses delight him, as does her honesty. Great storytelling despite the well used trope of an EMP attack on the U.S. This was another series, I think there's eight books, that I really enjoyed. The second one was "meh" but the third makes up for it.Ģ) The New World Series by G. Its the first book in a trilogy, and really, the best of the three though I'd still recommend all three. This may have been the first I ever read and it made a huge impact on my way of thinking about our society. Here's some series or stand alone books I highly recommend if you're looking to read more in the genre: When I say I've read a lot of post-apoc fiction, I mean I've read a LOT. None of them has any idea if his friends' stories are true, but they enjoy each other's company for reasons greater than words. They get together every now and then to tell each other haunting stories from their past. Ghost Story is the story of four old men: Frederick Hawthorne, Sears James, John Jaffery and Lewis Benedikt. And I'm not a guy that scares easy with books. The most terrifying ghost novel I've ever read is probably Peter Straub's iconic Ghost Story, which feels way too real to be comfortable and conventionally "fun". It's harder for them to catch you off guard because they can't just jump at you. Ghosts have always been a harder sell in literature than on screen, though. They just kick your ass until they get bored. Vampires can't be in the sun, werewolves can be shot with silver bullets, but what the fuck are you supposed to do with a ghost? You don't know what they want or what they can do to you. There are no rules when it comes to ghosts. |
